International Studies Program

Students pursuing English/Spanish proficiency will have the opportunity to enter the Spanish Section of the International Studies Program (IS). This dual recognition program is a collaborative effort of M-DCPS and the Ministry of Education and Science of Spain.

The IS offers students the opportunity to explore social science and science objectives which are part of Spain's educational curriculum and not covered by Florida standards.

This highly demanding academic program will enable students to receive a "bachiller" degree from Spain as well as a High School Diploma upon successful 12th grade graduation from the program and fulfillment of the educational requirements set up by each country.

The IS functions as a component of Ada Merritt's English/Spanish two way bilingual program with an additional hour of daily instruction in Spanish.

Reading, Writing & Public Speaking

The study of world literature to foster cultural awareness is used as the vehicle to teach writing, reading, debate and public speaking.

Critical concepts and ideas are explored through multicultural readings in the three languages of instruction.

Math & Science

Math and science are integrated to include biology, chemistry, physics, environmental science, mathematics, algebra, geometry, probability and scientific measurements.

Foreign Languages

While mastering English, the students will master a second language as well - Portuguese or Spanish.

Fine Arts

Fine Arts are an integral part of the program.

Music, art, sports and drama encourage students to explore their special talents and develop an appreciation for past and present cultures and the contributions these cultures have made to the fine arts.

Technology

Classrooms and the computer lab are equipped with computers, printers, listening stations and internet access. These instructional resources enhance the development of research, thinking and communication skills.

Computers are used to address critical thinking skills related to the study of the target language and culture, as well. Students use the internet to access e-mail and to communicate with scientists, authors, and historians.

Students participate in joint projects with their local, national and global counterparts.
